Surgical Extraction

S

Short Description

The removal of a tooth that requires cutting into gum or bone, often for impacted or broken teeth.

Long Description

A surgical extraction is a more complex form of tooth removal that involves making an incision in the gum and possibly removing bone or sectioning the tooth to extract it. This type of extraction is typically needed for impacted teeth, broken teeth, or teeth with curved roots.

Unlike simple extractions, which can be done using forceps alone, surgical extractions may require stitches and a longer healing period. They are often performed by oral surgeons, though general dentists may also perform them in certain cases.

Recovery includes post-operative care such as managing swelling, avoiding certain foods, and following instructions to prevent complications like dry socket or infection. Pain is usually managed with over-the-counter or prescribed medication.
