Short Description

Thin protective coatings applied to molars to prevent cavities by sealing out plaque and food particles.

Long Description

Sealants are thin plastic coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of back teeth (molars and premolars) to prevent tooth decay. They fill in the deep grooves and pits where food and bacteria can get trapped and cause cavities.

Sealants are typically applied during childhood, soon after permanent molars erupt, but can also benefit adults at risk for decay. The procedure is quick, painless, and non-invasive—often completed in a single visit without the need for drilling.

Though not a substitute for brushing and flossing, sealants offer extra protection and are particularly helpful for those with deep enamel grooves. With good care, they can last several years and significantly reduce the risk of decay.
