Short Description
A horizontal overlap where the upper front teeth protrude beyond the lower front teeth.
Long Description
Overjet is an orthodontic term describing the horizontal distance between the upper and lower front teeth, where the upper teeth project forward beyond the lower teeth. It’s often confused with overbite, which refers to vertical overlap.
A mild overjet is normal, but an excessive one may interfere with chewing, speaking, or jaw alignment, and may increase the risk of trauma to the front teeth. It can also be associated with thumb sucking or skeletal discrepancies.
Treatment depends on the severity and the underlying cause, and may include braces, clear aligners, or orthognathic surgery. Correcting overjet can improve oral function, aesthetics, and long-term dental health.
