Short Description
The removal of heavy plaque, tartar, or infected tissue to allow for accurate diagnosis or root canal treatment.
Long Description
Debridement is a dental procedure involving the thorough removal of plaque, calculus (tartar), or infected tissue from the teeth and surrounding structures. It is often performed when buildup is so excessive that it prevents a dentist from completing a proper exam or cleaning.
This procedure is more intensive than a standard cleaning and may be the first step in managing periodontal (gum) disease. Once heavy deposits are removed, the dentist can more accurately evaluate gum health and determine the need for further procedures like scaling and root planing.
In endodontics, debridement also refers to the removal of infected pulp and debris from within the root canal system during a root canal procedure. This step is essential for eliminating bacteria and ensuring that the canals are clean before sealing, helping prevent reinfection and tooth loss.
