Basic Cleaning

B

Short Description

A routine dental cleaning that removes plaque, tartar, and stains from teeth to maintain oral health.

Long Description

A basic cleaning, also known as a prophylaxis, is a routine dental procedure performed by a hygienist or dentist to remove plaque, calculus (tartar), and surface stains from the teeth. It’s recommended every six months for individuals with healthy gums.

The procedure typically includes scaling to remove buildup above the gumline and polishing to smooth the teeth and remove stains. It’s essential for maintaining oral hygiene and preventing more serious conditions like gingivitis and periodontal disease.

Basic cleanings are usually covered by dental insurance as part of preventive care. While effective for healthy mouths, they are not sufficient for patients with gum disease, who may require a deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) instead.
